Co-Founder, Old Souls
Cold Spring, NY
Originally from Buffalo, James knew the city wasn’t forever. An avid fantasy real estate enthusiast, he initially discovered Cold Spring through online searches, though his booming Flatiron-based wood company hindered an immediate escape north. He and his wife Tara began their gradual lifestyle transition trading their industrial digs in Williamsburg for a Fort Greene townhouse and weekend sojourns.
Even in Brooklyn, we had a dog, a little backyard—we were already living a less-urban life.
You’re able to get off the train and immediately onto a hiking trail.
About a year after moving to town, the couple launched Old Souls, a wilderness lifestyle brand spotlighting a carefully curated selection of rugged apparel, outdoor goods and supplies at its Main Street storefront. It’s a favorite stop both for locals and wandering backpackers passing between trail heads and the train.
When I look out at the highlands, the river, the sunset, I am easily reminded how lucky we are to live here.
James, an adventurer and fly fishing guide, has traveled to the farthest corners of the globe, but there’s still something about the Hudson Valley that brings him back home. The Carolls will soon open their second venture in town: an old school barbershop with 10 rotating craft beer taps, light fare and a weekend raw bar.
