Ah, the luxury of a lawn and a garden and perhaps a pool for your family, even though you dread abandoning the Whitney, the Frick and other cultural gems of New York City. I get it—but relax! You can enjoy a vibrant art scene without ever leaving Greenwich, CT – a town that not only embraces culture but invests in it.

The Bruce in Greenwich, CT.

The Bruce Museum

Let’s start with the Bruce Museum. Already world-class, it underwent a $67 million renovation in 2023, tripling its size to showcase its extensive collections and traveling exhibits. The Bruce, as locals call it, is an art, science, and natural history museum with permanent exhibits on Native American culture, as well as world-class fine art. Not only will you find works by masters like Rodin, Picasso and Warhol, but recent solo shows of David Hockney and Blanche Lazzell (1878—1956), an American modernist and pioneer of the woodblock print.

The Bush-Holley House

Did you know? Greenwich’s Cos Cob section was a creative hotspot in the late 19th century and early 20th century, attracting artists like Childe Hassam and John Henry Twachtman to what is now known as the Bush-Holley House. This “Cos Cob Art Colony” played a pivotal role in shaping American Impressionism, and many of their works are regularly on display here. The Bush-Holley House is also home to the thriving Greenwich Historical Society.

The Flinn Gallery

The Flinn Gallery, located in the Greenwich Library, regularly presents a diverse range of contemporary art exhibitions and related programs. Like The Bruce, the Greenwich Library underwent a recent renovation — in their case, an $18 million redo — to accommodate a new theater and innovation lab.  This cultural mecca hosts a vibrant lineup of guest speakers, musicians and discussions.

The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra

Classical music lovers, rejoice.  The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1940, and led by Tony Award-winning maestro Stuart Malina, performs five concerts a year at the Greenwich High School performing arts center. Not just any high school auditorium: it recently enjoyed a $47 million investment by the town and state, resulting in a 1,300 seat space, masterminded by the industry’s most respected sound engineers.

Greenwich Town Party

If rock is your jam, you’re in luck. Founded by investor/philanthropist Ray Dalio, the annual Greenwich Town Party is a lively music festival that, by day, is family musical fun, and by night, an always-electrifying event featuring legends like Eric Clapton, Alanis Morissette, Earth Wind and Fire and John Fogerty, set against the breathtaking waterfront.

Of course, it’s lovely having Manhattan’s epic culture scene less than an hour away, but Greenwich glistens with its own vibrant arts and music scene. Plus, we have backyards with real grass.
