We were so excited to have Ron Schulhof and Michelle Sterling from the Scarsdale Food Scrap Recycling program at the office. They informed us all about the program being launched in Scarsdale and how residents can now bring all food scraps to the drop-off site at the Recycling Center. We are the first municipality in Westchester to offer this service. Approximately 600 homes are participating, since the program launched in January over 26,000 lbs. of food scraps have been collected and turned into useful compost.
This program is for more than just backyard composting items: all food scraps are accepted, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, bread, rice, pasta, raw and cooked food, as well as cut flowers, napkins, paper towels and wax paper. The material is then brought to a compost facility and turned to soil.
They also offer “starter kits” to make it easy for you. They are available at the Scarsdale Recycling Center Office for $20/kit. The kit includes a countertop pail, storage and transportation bin and roll of 25 compostable bags.
The Recycling Center is located at 110 Secor Road in Scarsdale and open Monday- Saturday from 8am-3pm
