The Town of Poughkeepsie is located in Dutchess County and is home to Vassar College and Marist College. The City of Poughkeepsie wraps around the Town of Poughkeepsie in a crescent shape and is located mid-way between Albany and New York City. Both Town and City are located on the scenic Hudson River.

A catalyst for change and growth in Poughkeepsie is the opening of the Walkway over the Hudson. This former railroad bridge connects Poughkeepsie to Highland and was damaged by fire in the 70s.  The community worked ambitiously to re-invent this structure into a venue that offers public enjoyment of the bridge's historic architecture, the scenic wonders of the Hudson River Valley and the diversity of its recreational and cultural activities.

Opened in 2009,  Walkway over the Hudson is a walking promenade –the longest pedestrian bridge in the country – and has been graced by over 750,000 pedestrians who have strolled this inviting public space and absorbed the beauty of the Hudson River Valley free of cars, trucks and traffic lights.
