Pound Ridge is a town with a deeply entrenched reputation for embracing the open-minded, and by the 1950s, young movers and shakers in the art, advertising, and publishing worlds were building and buying Modern homes here. Modernism was considered forward-thinking and optimistic, and these homes and the people who created them changed the town’s landscape. The original Mid-century Modern homes were efficient, functional, and thanks to large expanses of glass, they blurred the line between indoors and out.

Over the past 60 years, this Modern Marvel, sited on a five-acre parcel overlooking a private lake, has been updated and expanded by its various owners, including prominent figures in the music, art, and fashion industries. Conveniently located only 12 minutes from the New Canaan train station, the secluded property boasts a salt-water swimming pool and spa, sport court, and lakefront boating dock.

Lending itself to both weekenders in search of a country getaway and full-time residents, this sophisticated work of art serenely rises from its woodland setting. You may feel your blood pressure drop as you walk along the stone path beside the koi pond and waterfall to the two-story glass entry. Inside, a rock garden and Noguchi water feature set a tranquil tone for upscale, indoor/ outdoor living.

With floor-to-ceiling glass walls in just about every room, you will feel like you are living outdoors—albeit with all the amenities of a luxury home, including a Crestron system to control everything from music to lights, heat, security, and even the automated window shades.

Whether you like to workout or simply work from home, you’ll want to take a waltz up the spiral staircase to the second floor that houses the gym, roof deck, and an expansive office with spectacular views in three directions.

Entertaining on a large or intimate scale is a breeze here. Simply guide your guests to the first-floor wine room to choose the perfect vintage Cab, and then invite them to join you in the sun-filled, chef’s kitchen, recently renovated by Bilotta Kitchens. Featuring state-of-the-art appliances and organic elements, this welcoming and open space will likely inspire some fabulous meals.

Pick up a tray of appetizers, and head to the living/ dining room, where a roaring fire in the vintage fieldstone fireplace will set a warm tone for your gathering. Dinner can be served indoors or al fresco, as the glass walls slide open to a bluestone terrace. After dinner, head to the three-exposure media room where you and your guests will find ample space for playing games, watching movies, and serving cocktails from the bar. Grab a towel from the adjacent, brand-new hallway bath and head out to the pool, spa, and dry sauna or follow the path down to the lake for an evening excursion in your canoe.

At the end of a night of entertaining or simple at-home family fun, tuck everyone into the three accommodating guest/ family bedrooms and then retreat to your private master suite that embraces its natural environment in a very modern way. A first-floor sanctuary, it includes radiant stone floors, a spa-like bath, steam shower, a gallery of closets, and a bedroom with bucolic views. With a touch of a button, the shades will lower, the lights will dim, and as you sink into bed, you will think “there’s no place like home.”
