White Plains today is best known as Westchester's city center, a modern town that keeps the urban in suburban. But before brutalist high-rises, world-class shopping, a leading law school and putting on the Ritz, the birthplace of New York State was good old-fashioned, feel-good postcard Americana—and it's still there, if you know where to look. We recently listed three classic examples in the historic county seat:

    11 VERMONT AVENUE | $2,195,000

Completed in 1903, this classic Victorian in venerable Prospect Park has been meticulously restored, inviting refreshing but restrained modernity to mingle with the home's authentically-preserved antique details. The result couldn't be more perfect: 6,000 square feet of interior space abounds with 10-foot ceilings, antique hardwood floors, leaded glass windows and five fireplaces. Rounding up the more modern additions are a state-of-the-art chef's kitchen, surround sound system, six-zone HVAC and radiant heat on the first floor. Two levels of wrap-around porch frame the gorgeous grounds, which include a pool, gardens and a three-car garage with guest quarters.

In Fisher Hill, this perfect Foursquare is a modest successor to the Victorian flamboyance, presenting that same classic style and symmetry in a slightly more subdued package. Well-proportioned rooms are hallmarked by the rich millwork, hardwood built-ins and oak flooring typical of the era, with no shortage of sunlight beaming upon all of it. A backyard adds a patio and detached garage—not a bad amount of space for being a shorter train ride to Midtown than even many "in' Brooklyn neighborhoods.

We complete our tour at this gambrel-roofed Shingle Style, which woos us from the curb through its eyebrow dormers straight towards that curving cobblestone-framed front porch. Set back perfectly on a nearly one-acre (.87) lot, the home carries confidence and class that seemingly transcends all time. You'll find a handsome library with beamed ceilings and a river rock fireplace, spacious kitchen with large breakfast area, oversized living room and parlors on both the main and upper floors, which are connected via grand staircase.
